San Sebastiano antique painting
NOT AVAILABLE
Painting - Genoa - Neoclassical Period - Mid 1700s - Oil on canvas - Original frame.
Large oil painting depicting St. Sebastian in the typical iconography of the Roman military, martyr for supporting the Christian faith and scourged to death on the Palatine Hill by Diocletian.
Curious how, historically in art, a soldier has practically always been depicted as a young ephebic and semi-naked boy, giving greater prominence to the pathos of his martyrdom (legend has it that he was pierced by arrows until a part of his body was discovered) than to his role as a high officer of the Imperial Army.
Genoa, Neoclassical period (mid-1700s) in original shaped frame lacquered in black and gold.
The painting is in good condition, the canvas has no breaks (even if it is without patina and "dry" in some places), the frame is perfect.
Measures are with frame.
For collectors.
