Pair of old English prints of fogeys
Pair of prints – England – 1741 – Etching technique – Depicting General Jreton and the Earl of Rochester – Flat frame in white lacquered wood and marbled passepartout.
Pair of etching technique engravings depicting one General Jreton and the other Laurence Hyde Count of Rochester framed in two white lacquered wood plates and with breathtaking faux marble passepartout.
The beauty of ancient prints is that everything is written in small print: the painter of the paintings from which these engravings are taken is Godfrey (or Gottried) Kneller, specialized in portraits of the powerful of the time; printed by John & Paul Knapton in London in 1741, publishers famous for having published the complete works of Alexander Pope and active until 1789; engraved by Jacobus Houbraken (Dordrecht, 1698 – Amsterdam, 1780) in the Dutch capital also in 1741. Furthermore, the two prints also show where the two works come from: the General from the collection of Lord David Polhill, while the Count of Rochester from the collection of His Highness the Earl of Burlington.
Small wear and patina on the frames, but prints in really excellent general conditions.
