Foam Pipes – Germany – Empire Era – First decades of the 1800s – Sepiolite, amber and glass paste.

Pair (different) of pipes from the same collection: Germany, Empire Period, early 19th Century, in sea foam.

But what is sea foam? Also called Meerschaum (translation from German) gives the name to these pipes and is a mineral, sepiolite, so called because it can be found floating on the waters of the Black Sea.

Here some details: https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pipa_Meerschaum

A pipe depicts a young fisherman astride the rod who, smiling and triumphant, shows us the freshly caught lobster. Complete with amber mouthpiece.

The other depicts the head of a bird of prey with glass paste eyes rising from the flames, presumably representing the Phoenix. This one is missing the mouthpiece, but we have the upper breather and the original case with “Leo” written on it. Weiss-Genoa”.
