Ancient Saruk carpet
Saruk carpet - Iran - Early 1900s - Wool.
The city of Saruk is located in the central region of Iran about 40 km north of Sultanabad.
The solidity of the structure, the elegance of the design and the pleasantness of the colours, chosen from the softest and most tenuous shades, made Saruk, during the 20th Century, one of the most exported carpet qualities in the West, especially in the U.S.A.
The most commonly used colors for ancient specimens of Saruk carpets are pink, blue and beige. Their node is of the asymmetrical type and can reach rather high levels of density. Very important and sought after are the so-called "American" Saruks: these are specimens produced for the US market between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, mainly in large formats, decorated with large floral ramages that were gathered to form a medallion in the center and distributed symmetrically throughout the field. The wools used were of high quality, often imported from the United Kingdom, while the most used color was a refined shade of pink called dughi. The "American" Saruk are today among the most sought after and appreciated ancient Persian carpets.
Large size, in wool, early 1900s.
Soft colors, small defects on the edges and peelings from use, of which the price takes particular account, but really good general condition.
