Clock stand – Genoa – Late 1800s, early 1900s – Carved oak, wrought iron and oil on panel.
Tempus fugit...
Very particular Genoese clock stand from around the end of 1800, in oak carved in patina (of a beautiful warm colour) with a panorama painted in oil on a panel of the city of Genoa and a wrought iron hook on which the clock was hung.
But why did similar objects once exist?!
In antiques there is always a reason for things: "onion" watches were like our smart watches today (ok, perhaps with a little less functions) and the ladies of the past (apparently ladies were considered incapable of reading the time) when he arrived in the studio, he might need to consult it often, so why not hang up his pocket watch and make it a table watch? Furthermore, consider that the clocks, placed on a cold surface such as a marble surface, went haywire with the thermal change and had to be recalibrated...
In short, out of laziness and practicality, watch holders were invented.
Please note the details of the wrought iron hook and the hourglass with wings on the cymatium of the picture: precisely, tempus fugit.
Wear and patina, small chromatic lack on the painting at the bottom right, but no breaks, antiquity in excellent condition.
Rattopennugo includes a gold-plated onion clock that is not functional, but which completes the aesthetics of this very particular object.
Very rare decorative element, collectible.
