Bits of history
Restoration has never been a universal art!
Its rules have changed throughout the centuries in different ways around the world. Which is the determining factor? Religion.
Are you a gothic style lover?
Well, you have to know Eugene Viollet-le-Duc, french architect: lived in XIX century, he made history for giving priority to the original style aspect of the artworks to restore…and was also accused to put gothic style in works of other ages.

On the other hand, if you are more conservative, you definitely would have liked John Ruskin…
English intellectual, he claimed that artworks must be preserved the way history and time gave them to us. Actually, he believed that restoration was like a useless practice, or even a deception, compromising the authenticity. Today, a hundred years after his departure and with several new techniques, he probably wouldn't be so adamant!
